my name is natasha and i have lost 55+ pounds. the majority of my weight was lost within a year, but i have been living a healthy lifestyle for almost two years now. it was done through clean eating and working out. my goals for the new year are to lose 10-20 more pounds of fat and gain muscle. my entire diet and exercise plan can be found on my blog: http://imgonnamakeachange.tumblr.com/

Article from Muscle & Fitness January 2013. (I claim no rights to anything. I just cut it out of my magazine and scanned it in for you to use. Everything property of its respective owners.)

I don’t usually find too much worth sharing from this magazine (I find it has more ads than I can filter out) but this was a great article about getting your HEAD into the game. And your mind is often the hardest part about exercise.

Fantastic information! Little iffy about the protein shake though- some whey protein can be of high quality.

^1. I disagree, our diets are already full of protein, and shakes are just extra caloires and carbs, the average american diet consists of at least 100g of protein.

2.  I agree with everything except the heart rate.  Heart rate CAN tell you if you’re in a target zone using the Karvonen Formula.  Also using VO2 Max is a better way if you want to get technical for measuring how hard you’re working, the ASCM’s method of the talk test is a great way but it was made for people instead of using the 1-10 level of intensity along with the people who don’t know how to measure their heart rate or don’t know how (most people don’t) to measure their vo2 max.  Fick’s Equation is the best way to determine it:

\mathrm{VO_2\; max} = Q(\mathrm{CaO_2} - \mathrm{CvO_2}), when these values are obtained during an exertion at a maximal effort.where Q is the cardiac output of the heart, CaO2 is the arterial oxygen content, and CvO2 is the venous oxygen content.(CaO2 – CvO2) is also known as the arteriovenous oxygen difference.
